The Mapfre office tower was the emblematic element of the most important transformation carried out in Barcelona in the last 50 years, the Olympic Village opened the city to the sea. The tower rises as a perfect parallelepiped with a vibrant facade that accentuates a glimpse of the sea from within. The floor plan is square and symmetrically structured. The commercial building was placed on a large esplanade, facing the marina, landscaped with a large concentration of palm trees that accentuate its recreational character. To attract pedestrian traffic, a large concrete canopy was placed at first floor roof level, which served as a terrace on the first floor overlooking the marina.
The structure of the tower is a composite structure with a reinforced concrete core using the sliding formwork system and high-strength metal perimeter columns. The location of these pillars, eleven meters away from the core, gives the offices great diaphanousness. The floor slabs are of mixed concrete on metal beams.
The skin of the tower is made of stainless steel and inclined blue glass with walkways and eaves on each floor that give its silhouette a different appeal from other office buildings. The concern of executing a façade that protects the building from the environment and, in particular, from direct solar radiation, led to the creation of using different grades of stainless steel to achieve maximum visual quality, great overall thermal insulation and important blind parapets between floors that, together with the overhangs, prevent the spread of fire.

Concrete has been the cornerstone of human infrastructure for centuries, but its environmental impact poses an urgent challenge. As the construction sector faces decarbonization, innovation in materials, processes and technologies is redefining its role in sustainability.
